dabba gul!

I was going to write a post about how Cubby came into his current Ganju (bald) avtaar, but when we went for lunch today, noticed a guy opening his dabba to have khaana, and all of us wondered when was the last time we carried a lunch box!

Since I moved to Bangalore, post shaadi, I almost never took dabba simply because I would have to cook some lunch to carry. It is just too much effort! Ek baar kar lete hai wahi bahot hai! Of cos when I was in Mumbai for my delivery, I used to carry lunch to work everyday. One, it meant, healthy food and more importantly MOM was cooking it! :D

I remember in my primary school, we had two breaks. One a sorta mini snack break and second a lunch break. The snack dabba would obviously get over very quickly! :p By the time we moved on to secondary school (thats 5th std onwards), there was just one break around lunch hour. By now, we also had groups and certain friends would have lunch together. WE would open our dabbas and hope that the other person had something nicer (read chatapata and unhealthy!). Worst would be if multiple people got same subzi, esp if it was something dull like cabbage.

My mom made fresh lunch before going to work. It was unwaveringly chapati and subzi. Add to that I was a picky eater. I could count subzis I like on fingers rather than the ones I didn't like. The only silver lining was my mom is a good cook, so even sad veggies tasted nice unlike some food some of my otha friends got.

Pav-bhaji held a special place in our heart. Pav-bhaji was lunch meant it was made the previous day for dinner at some pal's place. The mom's would always make extra for next day! The person who got it would take one pav BEFORE opening the bhaji dabba, to ensure he/she gets something at least! The scene after opening the dabba wasn't a lot better than all brothers eating like uncivilised animals in Satte Pe Satta! :p

I remember buddy G who used to eat ONLY alu subzi and that too made only in a particular fashion. She used to get it at least 4 days a week. The other two days was egg sandwiches which incidentally were very yummy. Her mom used to send a whole dabbaful and we would still finish it all.

V was me thinks the only north Indian in the group. The achaar she got was always in demand and so were the parathas! :)

Once I dropped my lunch box and so didn't eat it. That gave my wicked brain an idea. If i didn't like something , I would tell mom dabba gir gaya and the food she had so painstakingly prepared would be go in the dustbin. Of cos this didn't last for too long. One day she said show me the gira hua khaana and realised I hadn't even opened the dabba and was lying through my teeth! :(

Now when I cook and someone doesn't like/eat it, I feel so bad. Now I know how much effort it takes to put a fresh and complete meal on the table. Now I know how irritating it is when you ask someone what do you feel like eating and the person says "Anything! Kuch bhi chalega". Now I know what it feels like when food you have taken effort for gets thrown in to the dustbin.

After getting married to the totally non-fussy eater M, I have started eating almost all veggies without a complain. We make them l'il more chatpata (northie style) to make it interesting. Trust me, lauki paneer is MUCH nicer than the bland Marathi style doodhi chi bhaji! My bro who swore he will never eat lauki (snake gourd) didn't even realise he was eating it at our place! :p

When we started working, someone or the other would order one extra thing from the canteen to add a little spice! Now toh only dinner is made at home and M cooks half of it and me the rest and I have to concede M is a much better cook!

Mom, this post is for you! Thank you for making healthy and tasty food for us everyday! Now when I struggle to make different breakfast everyday, I can't help but look back how you made so many different kinds and we still made faces when you made upma once in a while! Or the time we tried to "improvise" the food you made! Sorry! We were little silly and young! :) And when you ask me even today what do you wanna eat, I will still say "Kaahi hee"!

Some things never change! Love ya mom!

P.s dreading the day I have to pack lunch for Cubby!

PPS - Whats in your lunch box today?! :)

Lovely post! Yes, moms are the best!

And my dear, I have to wake up at 6.30 every morning and agonize over the EO's tiffin. It never fails to drives me crazy and consider home-schooling as an option!

your post brings back so many memories!! i was a fussy eater too but i'd still finish lunch coz otherwise i'd be starving. But i diligently took a dabba post marriage even though i had to cook...the canteen food was just too awful!! when i got pregnant, mom sent food for me...all my fav stuff. i think that was the bestest time of my life :D

i too appreciate mom SO much more now. She'd make breakfast and lunch before she left for work and i think it's phenomenal....i barely manage oats and eggs for BB. Dreading cooking for BB when she starts school....no clue what to make :(

I must be a wierdo cos I actually like cooking -specially if it is not expected of me!
We bring dabba to work almost every day ... cos we are watching our health (too many pizzas and mozzarella sandwiches are not good for health, we've realised! :) )

The diff is that after BB ,I cook and freeze them on sundays instead of doing them daily. Today we are having jeera rice with vatana bhaji...and tomorrow hopefully we are going out!!

Abha ,

Lovely! I took lunch everyday to school too, and like u unfailingly it used to be Roti and subzi. For my short stint in Chennai I was the only one bringing roti subz everyday.

As soon as I got to move out by myself after college, the canteen was my mai baap...or maggie..one of those two...

And now post wedding, I am lucky to be still with mom and so she still packs dabba...aah the bliss...I am dreading moving out..which we will have to do within the next yr...but thank god S is a non fussy eater...and hopefully he loves cooking too..lolz

Oh God, that is my story as well. Its surprising how suddenly your feelings make a U-Turn and you start appreciating your moms dabba ONLY when you move away from the house.
One thing I will do right away is forward this article to my girls... and hope that they start liking what I send!!!!!!! Sigh! I know its a wishful thinking.. still!

p.s. It was chapati with beetroot curry :( Talk about healthy food!

Maharashtrian sabzis are usually so bland na... don't remind me of dudhi chi bhaji please!!! :)

But I too appreciate my mom so much more now that I cook my own food. Its a different story that I am slowly turning into her of course... planning menus in my head each evening!

This post brought back very warm memories :)
I absolutely love Maharashtrian food! In school,I had a Maharashtrian friend called Aditi Mulay.Every single day we used to trade our lunches; one of her chapthis and some subji for my rasam/sambhar rice + curd rice! What fun that was!!
My mom's bisibelebath was/is very famous. There used to be a bloodbath on the day I got BBB for lunch!

Wow! i so totally relate to this post. Mom is high up there on my pedestal since i got married and started cooking..

Such a warm post!

It is so true that everyday I remember my mom for so many things!! She always used to say that when we grow up we will realise a lot of things! And it is so true!

We did not like so many things and made faces. We sometimes did not eat. We sometimes told her outrightly that it was not as good :( And now when I think back, I feel so bad. Now, when I cook something and G says its not good, it breaks my heart to pieces!! And it hurts so bad!

Moms ROCK !!

Reminds me of my 3 layered dabba which consisted of rasam sadam, curd rice and the top one of vegetables - no change for over 7 years i think. But i still carry a dabba to work, just to avoid eating the boring sandwich....

I havent had a break from the 'dabba'so far. Now I pack lunch for my husband.I kind of like having the lunch packed for myself and for my family- all of us at different places, at differnt times opening a dabba and having a common home made lunch.Feels good :)

My lunch box today has yummy n spicy chole. And I still carry dabba to office, bolw to I cook both the times...basically I love cooking :-)

Lovely post dear, remindes me of my shcool days. there was this punjabi classmate of mine whoes Mom used to make lip smacking & spicy channe. The days she used to bring that we used to exchange our dabbas in the school bus itself he he he

BTW that was mean of you to thro ur dabba...Hmmm may cubby gives it back to you ;)

G said...

yeah, dabba gul is a situation everywhere i guess! i used to try to cook for 2 meals in the night and pack tht up in the morning, like extra sabzi/dal which could be given with chapatis if i could mk them in the morn or bread atleast. My canteen food was so horrible, it forced me to arrange alternatives! Plain boiled sprouts are really filling too...you can always add canteen ka salt/pepper/ketchup ltr.

~nm said...

I still get dabba to office. I did almost whole of the month even when my cook was on leave. Primarily because I didn't have a choice as we have no canteen at work :P

But yes, even if I've a choice I just cannot eat outside food for more than 2 days in a row. So home dabba is always preferred even if it means simple daal-rice!

Hey thats such a sweet post, it brought back memories. We too shared our dabbas back in school days. Thats one thing Indians do- share food.
BTW, its interesting to note that you have counted yourself amongst the South Indians. Well, I did too as I'm from B'bay, before I met Tamilians and Andhrites, who called me a Northie :) Funny, isn't it? :)

Priyanka said...

BTW, I'm planning to feed noodles n pasta to Ash in her dabbas, easier to make. I'm a lazy cook ;)

lunch dabbas at school were the best...that circle we used to sit in sharing our food...

and now its a full circle, trying to get the kids to eat, tho i must say they are not fussy even tho they do have their likes an dislikes,

nice post...:)

Hehehehe....Cute post Abha...BTW I stopped takin Dabba with me when I was in Class 6th...after so many dabbaless years I have just started taking Dabba again thanks to my Mom.. Nothing can beat Maan Ke Haath Ka Khana... :)

While reading your post and the comments posted thereafter, I wondered how come everyone took roti-sabzi to school and then looked around to see 'other' kids bringing the more 'tempting' stuff!! Me - hated my regular dabbas consisting of 'regular' stuff ... but so much appreciate it now..
Lovely post..

After this phase in life when you eat out everyday, home-cooked food is the best.....and though the maid goes kind of crazy with the oil, it's still a better, healthier alternative. I am a Dabbawalla.

suma - yes! lunch break meant chatting rather than eating! nahi?! i hope Cubby is not fussy too! hope hope!! :D

toon ji - 6th std is very young, nahi?! chalo make up for it now! and i doubt Cubby will have same things to say about maa ke haath ka khaana!! hehe!

puja - yeah! i guess all of us were looking for that elusive bad mother who sent unhealthy = tasty food!! :p

QI - dabbawallas get to go to UK to talk about their six sigma skills! :D and yeah, even i manage lunch outside everyday simply because at least dinner is at home!

Yeah, I remember the lunch boxes of my school days too. I used to look forward to opening it and seeing the surprise snack inside :)

Hey what is wrong if i say 'kuch bhi chalega' if i mean it. If i enjoy almost everything, provided i trust the cook, you should not be irritated. Yes it would be better to give a choice among available options and then ask what i would like to eat. Yes darling here also M is to be blamed[i have his genes to].

Toonfactory said...

Who knows Cubby might say- Nothing can beat Papa Ke Haath Ka Khana..Naye Zamane ka Naya Statement...BTW since school days the menu of my dabba has always been limited to Gobhi/Bhindi/Arbi/Gatte ki sabzi and Parathas...(used to have a special Aaloo ki sabzi too but ab Aaloo band hai kaafi time se)

Anonymous said...

I didn't carry...ate at the canteen!

Mama - Mia said...

cuckoo - well i was always interested in seeing what is my friends dabba, since i knew what mine carried! :p

Papa - we arent talking about ideal situations, are we??!! hehe!! ki jyo avlbl hai bataaye, phir pooche what would you prefer! hotel hi khol de! hehe!! :D

Toon ji - yeh hui naa mardowaali baat!! but sach mein M is a better cook, mainly because he is open to experimenting rather than tried and tested methods!

chandni - but you do cook nice stuff, dontcha?! :)

cheers!
