a BIDWF and a tag!
Cub turns 3 next month and this time we plan to have a big pahty with everyone we know and care about being there. Past two years we have had quieter affairs and haven't done anything in Bangalore, ever!
So, yesterday on our car ride to a restaurant I asked him "Cub, what cake do you want? An aeroplane? or nemo? Mowgli? Baloo? Sully?" and all the other animated characters he likes. He listens to me for sometime and then says "Nahi! Mujhe sirf chocolate cake chahiye!"
Both M and me burst out laughing and told him that cake will be chocolate only with whatever picture he wants on it! :)
and tonight he asked his father when he was changing him into night suit"I am looking cute, naah?!" HUH?!
Best bud Momo's ma tagged me to talk about My Sins against the gender stereotype.
For the longest time I wanted to be a guy to get all the freedom guys do. I used to be a pucca tomboy and couldn't imagine a different life! But soon I knew i could be the girl i was and yet do what i wanted! Total win-win situation, eh?! :)
I am not into dressing up / make up. Yes, i like my lipstick, but thats it. I dont even know how to apply nail polish on my own! gah!
I have been riding a two wheeler since I was 16 and still LOVE it! Thanks to my Dad who refused to mollycoddle me, I even have a fair bit experience in pushing my two wheeler to the closest service station and getting it repaired! Ofcourse, I am yet to learn to drive and hope to some day!
Maybe because books available at home were my Dad's taste, i have not read a single mills and boons or danielle steele, but devoured the Robin Cooks, John Grishams, Dick Francis Arthur hailey and gang!
I started traveling on my own to Pune by train by the time I was 10 and was traveling by overnight buses to Kolhapur by 12 years.
I wore shorts in my teens much to chagrin of most of our neighbours! I still wear em and dont really care about the neighbours anymore! ;)
I worked super late hours and traveled by myself in trains and cabs.
In both my pregnancies, i managed / am managing my doc visits etc on my own without needing M to accompany me.
I got a tattoo done and did not scream in pain or shed a single tear! :p
I could not cook to save my life till I got married and now both us can churn out a decent meal! :)
I could not be the shy bride even if I wanted to and grinned throughout the ceremonies and later!
i LOVE Tarantino and Guy Ritchie movies including Kill Bill. Ofcos the change in taste happened post shaadi, but am glad for it. So now I can watch mush and dhishum dhishum with equal ease.
I have gotten off my bike to move huge stone in the middle of the road that was causing traffic jam while all men waited for god knows what and giggled when I did it. gah!
I have gone out with all guy gang of friends at 3am for cutting chai and bhurji pav and really miss those days.
and though we never had offcial proposal between us, it was me who initiated "lets be more than friends" with M and hounded him till he married me! I still cry buckets everytime i watch Friends episode where Monica proposes to Chandler. :)
When it comes to living up to the gender norms, I still havent tried learning the whole finance bit and i cry a lot! For good and bad stuff! :D Yet, right now I am comfortable in my skin and enjoying being me!
I think whole world has been tagged with this, so if there is someone who hasn't done it as yet, feel free! :)

Marathi rhymes anyone?! :)
I have never participated in Tulika's blogathon, rather I am still to introduce Cub to the world of Tulika books, though I have been regularly admiring them, reading the reviews and at times buying a few too!
Now that Cub is almost 3 and enjoying being read to much more (and listening to stories without books as well), I hope he will have as much fun with Tulika books!
This is my entry for Tulika Blogathon 4.
I frankly don't remember too many and the ones I seem to remember, I don't think I can translate them. Still picking up the simplest ones!
This one is sang just as a game to tickle to the baby and make him/her laugh.
Ithe Ithe bais re mora (this is sang with one finger dancing on baby's palm)
Baal Deto Chaara(Fold two of baby's l'il fingers)
Chaara Khaa (Fold another two of baby's l'il fingers)
Paani Pee (Fold the last of baby's l'il fingers)
Aani bhoor udun jaa (this is said with fingers running across the length of baby's hand and ends with tickling him/her just under the neck or armpit)
Translation
O peacock, come and sit here
The baby is giving you something to eat
Eat the food
Have some water
and flllyyyy away!
The eternal favourite rain song thats been sang I think forever!
Ye re Ye re pausa
Tula deto paisa
paisa jhaala khota
paus aala motthha!
Ye ga ye ga Sari (sar pronounced like Sir) and it mean a quick but heavy shower of rain)
Majhe madke bhari
Sarr aali dhaaun (Sarr pronounced as Sir and it means a quick but heavy shower of rain)
Madke gele vahoon
Translation
Come Come O rain
I will give you a paisa
The paisa turned out to be fake
Then there was big (heavy) rainfall!
Come come, o rain shower
Fill up my earthen pot
The rain came down in a rush
My pot floated away with it
This one is to teach the kids their relations. Well sort of! :)
Khabdak Khabdak Ghodoaba
Ghodya var basle laadoba
Laadobache laad kartay kon?
Aaji ajoba, maavshya don Translation
Rock Rock, rocking horse
Our l'il darling is riding the horse (laadoba is like laadla/li)
Who is pampering our l'il darling?
Grandma, grandpa and two aunts
You can easily easily replace all these people kaka, kaku, mama and mami and any other relatives one has! :)
This one i didnt remember completely so called Google baba for rescue. pasting the image and will type the translation. This is to teach the baby body parts.

Translation
Little finger
Middle finger like a flower
Palm
Wrist - Elbow
Shoulder - neck - Chin
Mouth (bhataacha (rice) bolka - bolka typically is colloquial for mouth without teeth!)
Pipe to smell (nose)
Kaajal holders (eyes)
God's back
On God's back you hear the chirping of so many birds (this i am absolutely NOT sure of!)
And this last one, I didn't listen to as a kid. Recently came across it and thought it was damn cute!
chalat hota saral
bus madhe chadhla
tickit nahi kadhla
seat khali lapla
saral ghar ghathla
Translation
Once there was a cockroach
Who was walking real straight
got on to a bus
and didnt buy a ticket
it hid under the seat
and reached straight home!
Phew! This translation business is really tough especially when so much has to do with cultural ethos of that particular time and place. I know I have done a shoddy job by literally translating, but hey this is the best I could do! Not everyone can do an awesome job like Starry and PV!
But this was good fun! Also I really need to check with my mom about what those other few rhymes mean. I know in spirit, but to translate it i need more help! :p

The Cousin Capers!
Now Cub stays really far from his cousins. His parents don't get the kind of long leaves that allow for real summer vacations and that means his chance to spend time with them comes once in a while and not for more than day or two. But we are greedy with whatever we can get and look forward to these times. We got a small window when we went to Delhi in December last year and an even smaller one just this weekend which went by when the same cousins along with the local first cuz came to stay over with us for a night! We actually abducted them straight from the wedding we were all attending. Watching these kids bond was so much fun! :)
For Mrigs, Cub's first cousin, this was the absolute first time he was spending the night without his parents. Till we were awake and playing (well past midnight mind you), he was alright. But then he wanted to go home and wanted his Mamma. Good thing about this kid is that he listens to reason. M managed to calm him down, showed him Jungle book on TV and played with him till he slept! I think for a first timer he was an absolute rock star!! I hope we can do it more often and he will soon be absolutely comfy! :)
A whole lot of credit for the whole time going smooth goes to M who is SO AWESOME with kids. Me, i just stepped back and played the photographer! So let me just share some of these special memories! :)
After looking at very dapper Vedu, I so wished I could have dressed Cub also in nice ethnic wear! :)
This was the first time Mrigs had plain milk with sugar since his ma gives him flavouyred milk. Only thing he had to say when initially offered sugarless milk was "Milk tastes weird in your house!" And next morning when M was pushing Cub to finish his milk, Mrigs came to his rescue saying "Why are you forcing him if he doesn't want to?! Let him be!" Needless to say M has been verry zapped! hehe!
Thank you Antz, Vedu and Mrigs for such lovely memories! And to their brave parents too! Let's do this more often, shall we?! :)
