Now now! Before you start imagining I have started my new year with a bang of another sorts, let me assure you alls well with me Head to Toe (except thinning hair n chipped nail polish! and the excess weight).
This is not about how the helmet saved my life, though I know it does a good job of it and recco one and all to wear one if you riding a two wheeler. Pillion rider doing it should not be laughed at and called paranoid either. I think it's nice to value your own life at all times. Only then can you take care of others. But then I digress.
Remember I had spoken about Cubby's "Hemme" (helmet) obsession in his 15month update? Well, it's still pretty much there and sighting of one is equivalent of being in paradise. M keeps talking about taking him to a helmet shop JUST to see his reaction. Yeah! Another one of those cheap parenting thrills. We are yet to do that and frankly I have quite warmed to the idea! :p And there I digress AGAIN.
So this morning, as soon I started getting ready for work, Cubby started crying and clinging to my legs. Amma took him to the balcony to show him dog, babies and whatever else catches his fancy so that I can get ready and leave on time.
I was set to leave and came out to say Bye to Cubby. As a principle, I NEVER leave hiding from him or by distracting him. I make sure I say a confident and cheery bye and hope that it will reduce his separation anxiety to an extent. We don't want him to think that we disappear everytime he looks away.
Now that he understands we go away and he doesn't like it, a good-bye smile doesn't come easily. He seems to say "I am not buying your smile! I KNOW you are leaving me and going away." Today also he had his grumpy face - not allowing it to break into a smile inspite of all my attempts. So then I said him "I will go down, wear my red helmet and say bye to you!"
I had uttered the magic word. My son who was till then sulking because I was going to office, physically pushed me towards the stairs, pointed towards them when I didn't move much and said a loud n clear Helmette! Both Amma and me burst out laughing and ofcos Cubby had to join in too. I could hear everyone's laughter including mine till I reached ground floor.
As I wore my helmet and waved to Cubby I could hear a faint helmette and saw a short wave by when an autorickshaw and some kids had already taken my baby's attention away! :)
So much for missing his Mom, huh?! :D

Lol.............love the helmet. :)
:-)
Wow...you've got a new way to get a smile out of him now :) Waiting for the kid in helmet shop post :p
Lol..so cute! And yeah..it takes very little to distract these kids from anything! And yeah..it doesn't feel good when they are being distracted from you :(
So sweet.
SO agree with you on the not leaving without telling him. It was hard in the beginning but now it ensures a comfortable, if not entirely happy farewell.
In fact, even on our vacation, we were at the family event and I was going out to pub with my cousins after it so my mum was going to take Ayaan home and put him to bed. Since he was already fast asleep when she left with him, I didn't get to tell him I was going. But while going to bed, he suddenly woke up and noticed my absence and cried a LOT and woke up 3-4 times in the night asking for me and crying. Even after I got back and slept next to him, he woke up a couple of times and I had to hold him and reassure him till he stopped crying...
now that you think of it, a security helmet makes a lot more sense than a security blanket. hmmmm
a security blanket would have been much easier to lug around when he is 7 yr old, though ;-)
cho chweet.... may be i should start wearing helmet in the car too now that Ojas has started sulking when we leave ;-)
and ya i am with u on that totally not sneaking out... i do that too though Ojas sulks but i am sure he'll learn slowly
LOL! You count your blessings young lady, if that blessed helmette is going to help the smiles come out again.. :-D Good ol' Cubby!

rohini - I can imagine Ayaan's state at the sudden disappearance esp since he IS at an age where he can understand these things a bit more. but i am sure our way works slowly and steadily! :)
V - oh well! its not like he needs it everywhere! as of now least! he is just happy to get whever and wherever he can! :)
monika - yeah! worth a shot, eh?! and good thing you say bye n leave! :)

Hey lovely post....I so loved the line- "We don't want him to think that we disappear everytime he looks away." Wait till Cubby grow up to read these lines...Real cute post and take him soon to a Helmet shop (and please don't forget to click and post pics of his reactions)
Dont know if toy helmets are in the market? Try and get him one if available. Better you are sad and Cubby R is sad than being scared. You are doing the right thing.
ha ha ha...so typical of a kiddo....
BTW red helmet??? seriously?? :D
Hahaha! Yes, the EO had this obsession with cars for a loooonnnnggg time!
Bless the helmet.
I like your idea of the confident 'bye' lest he grows up insecure.
lol! he's at a really fun age, enjoy him while u can before the terrible twos hit u (i'm reeling under that and BB isn't even there yet!)
good idea about never sneaking out to work. it'll grow on him slowly, not to worry :)
Awwwww.....:)
btw Vee sent me some pics from the wedding....a couple with u guys and one with cubby! want me to send them over?
toon ji - i was telling M that on popular demand we need to do helmet shop thing soon! :p
Papa - you think after having played with a full sized helmet he will settle for a TOY helmet?! hehe!
smita - yes! red as in its one ghaati maroon! :p been 3 years now! :D
namesake - least car obsession is little more ambitious than helmets! hehe!
mampi - :) thankee! and i really didnt think helmet idea would work like THIS! shooing me away! hehe!
angie - yes! i think this is the best age! and well he is bratty enough on most days! difficult to think terrible twos will make it worse! and what choice does the kid have than to let it grow! :)
AF - :D yeah send em over!
cheers!

Abha....Good to see CubbyR is so easily distracted...there were times when I used to yearn for some sign that kuttan misses me as well...pls pick up my 'award' for you from my blog.. :)
All I can say is I feel a lot of 'hemme' when I hear about cubby's antics. Just the kind of naughty fella mom says I was :)
cute :)
My colleague has 2 yr old daughter who could cry n create hungama when she's leaving for office!
:) Smiles as usual!!
And I did like the whole idea of getting the kid used to saying good byes, as hard as it may sound to be.
BM - well! you should be proud of how independent he is! to think of it he might have turned out like that even if you didnt work! thankgoo for the award!
avionic - i wonder if i can create and copyright the term "Hemmed" for someone who is terribly happy! :p
manasa - yup! kids cry! and its so natural. thats why its good to try and get them used to it slowly! :)
Puja - yes it is difficult! but its better than hiding n leaving till kid is too old to fall for it and will cry anywayz! nahi?!
cheers!

I am thinking whether I have ever left my kids without telling them.. I think I must have done once or twice at least because I am such a horrible mom.
oh gee! Asaaan, once or twice doesnt count! i have seen parents making it a habit! dunno why! i find that disconcerting! and if you are a m=bad mommy, i shouldnt even have bothered being one! :)
cheers!
abha
Oh well.. I was the hiding-and-sneaking-away-mom! But you are right that its better to make them accept things :)
And thank God for helmets. But who invented them? :))
wian - i am gonna levae the discovery of who invented them to Cubby! :)
